Giffords Submits 6,952 Petition Signatures, Demonstrating Broad Grassroots Support

All 345 Precincts in Congressional District 8 Represented; Number of Signatures Sets Record for 8th District

TUCSON - Demonstrating broad grassroots support throughout Southern Arizona, Gabrielle Giffords submitted 6,952 petition signatures today and officially filed her candidacy to be the next Congresswoman from Arizona. Each of the 345 precincts in Congressional District 8 was represented in the petitions, covering 4 counties and over 9,000 square miles.

6,952 signatures sets the record for the largest amount turned in for a Congressional campaign in the CD-8 race this year. The amount represents over 20% of the votes cast in the last Democratic congressional primary in CD-8, and also more than triples the number turned in by her nearest competitor for the Democratic nomination.

Gabrielle was accompanied by 35 enthusiastic members of her campaign as she submitted her petitions this morning to the Secretary of State’s office in Tucson. “Our campaign is excited to announce the extent of the broad grassroots support for change throughout the entire district,” Giffords said. “I’d like to thank all of the people of Southern Arizona who have signed a petition or helped to gather signatures on behalf of our campaign and what it stands for €“ making health care affordable, improving our schools, and creating good-paying jobs.”
