WASHINGTON, DC  The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), the independent political voice for the environment, today announced its endorsement of former State Senator Gabrielle Giffords for Congress in the 8th District of Arizona, citing her leadership on air and water issues and her consistent support of environmental causes that affect both Arizona and the entire nation.

Ms. Giffords was the prime sponsor of legislation (SB 1483, in 2005), which gave homeowners a tax incentive to install gray water systems to conserve and re-use water. Giffords has also been a steadfast champion for the environment on other issues that adversely affect the environment, particularly in regards to energy and global warming.

“LCV is proud to endorse Gabrielle Giffords because we see her as an environmental champion in the United States Congress, as she has been back home in Arizona,” said LCV Political Director Tony Massaro. “She knows well that the key to reinvigorating America’s economy is through a sustained effort to develop and market new and renewable forms of energy. She knows it’s American ingenuity and the American work ethic that will solve our energy challenges.”

In 2005, Ms. Giffords received a 100 percent rating from the Arizona League of Conservation Voters and was named “Most Valuable Player” in the legislature by the Sierra Club.

“I am honored to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, whose vast membership shares my values about conserving Arizona’s unique land and natural resources. Arizona is growing rapidly,” Ms. Giffords said. “Our economy is closely tied to how well we preserve our environment. As a third-generation Arizonan, I believe that our land, water and air must be protected for our children and grandchildren. Those were the values I fought for in the legislature, and I will continue that fight in Congress.”
