Arizona Police Association Endorses Gabrielle Giffords for Congress

Group Cites Giffords’ Dedication to Law Enforcement

TUCSON - Congressional candidate Gabrielle Giffords was officially endorsed today by the Arizona Police Association (APA), a professional association of like-minded individual and autonomous law enforcement employee groups.

“It is our belief that Gabrielle Giffords will bring the character and dedication necessary to improve the community and promote the ideals of effective law enforcement held by our members,” wrote Dale F. Norris, Executive Director, in his letter notifying the Giffords campaign of the APA’s endorsement.

“We can make our communities safer from crime, fires and other public safety hazards if we dedicate resources and stay prepared,” said Giffords. “I have a strong track record of being tough on crime and will continue that dedication in Washington.”

Giffords’ background shows that she is tough on crime. In the legislature, she sponsored a bill to strengthen the laws regarding sexual acts against minors and broaden the evidence that can be used against the perpetrators (SB 1288). She also sponsored a bill that would have made it a felony to engage in misconduct with weapons at child care facilities, preschool and after-school programs (SB 1096). Additionally, she sponsored legislation to crack down on illegal gun transfers and to track guns used in crimes (HB 2589).

The APA is a law enforcement association representing 7,000 Arizona federal, state, county and local law enforcement officers. The Association works to improve the lives of the rank-and-file men and women of law enforcement who risk their lives so that Arizona continues to be a safe place to live.

Giffords has been recognized by the following public safety organizations:

Arizona Conference of Police and Sheriffs (AZCOPS)
Associated Highway Patrolmen of Arizona
Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona
Tucson Fire Fighters Association
