Las Adelitas Announces Backing of Gabrielle Giffords; Southern Arizona Community Organization Cites Giffords’ Strong Progressive Values

TUCSON €“ Congressional candidate Gabrielle Giffords was officially endorsed today by Las Adelitas, a community organization of 700 Southern Arizona progressive activists united to improve the quality of life for Latinas and their families through political empowerment (www.lasadelitas.com).

“Gabrielle Giffords represents the heart of the goals of our organization,” said Regina Romero, Chairperson of Las Adelitas. “We are energized to get the word out about Gabrielle and are excited to work with her campaign in the months ahead.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Las Adelitas,” said Giffords. “Their ability to energize, mobilize, and organize voters has been proven and I look forward to working with them in my campaign to expand health care, improve our public schools, and create new jobs.

“It’s wrong that big drug and oil companies have so much influence, when working families who need lower-cost prescription drugs and less expensive alternative energy, have so little,” said Giffords. “In the Legislature, my guiding principle was to make a positive difference on the real problems our communities face,” Giffords said. “I’m proud to have helped to expand health care coverage for working families and helped to increase funding for our schools. I know that the members of Las Adelitas share my view that we need that kind of approach in Washington, because change can’t wait.”

Las Adelitas was formed in the summer of 2002. Since then, the group has worked to increase the Latina vote and participation in the political process. The organization is centered around the ideals of community building and community investment. They support community programs that parallel Latina issues and community support.
