Giffords Issues Statement on British Arrests of Terrorists

TUCSON - Congressional candidate Gabrielle Giffords issued the following statement today:

“I salute the British government for thwarting this terrorist plot and apprehending the suspects. Their actions protected the lives of many innocent people, including many Americans.

“A year after the bombings in the London subway and five years after 9/11, we must continue to work tirelessly with our allies, such as the United Kingdom, to close down the dangerous terrorist networks that threaten our nation. Protecting the security and safety of the American people should be our government’s first priority. These attempts remind us that America is still vulnerable, and that more must be done to keep our families and our communities safe. Washington still has more work to do to protect our homeland — Osama bin Laden still hasn’t been found, our military’s resources are stretched thin, and Iraq is dangerously unstable. Also, our airports, ports, borders and chemical plants remain unsecured. Congress should implement the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission in order to secure our country.

“I am committed to protecting our country, and security will be a top priority of mine in Congress.”
