Tucson Citizen Announces Endorsement of Gabrielle Giffords

TUCSON - The Tucson Citizen today announced its endorsement of Gabrielle Giffords in the Democratic primary for Arizona’s Congressional District 8.

“The youngest woman ever elected to the Arizona Senate, Giffords quickly established herself as a strong force and an impressive lawmaker,” the Tucson Citizen wrote. “That is a noteworthy feat for a Pima County Democrat in a Legislature dominated by Republicans from Maricopa County. Giffords has a true talent for negotiation, collaboration, compromise and consensus-building, as her record shows.”

“Giffords understands the real world, as a former successful businesswoman in Tucson. Her thoughtful, well-reasoned positions also are appropriate for the district,” the editorial continues. “Giffords also grasps the big picture, noting that U.S. trade policies must be amended to ultimately deter illegal immigration across our border with Mexico. Her views on the war in Iraq, health care, education and the federal budget likewise are insightful, reasonable and reflective of the district’s constituency.”

The Tucson Citizen also wrote: “District 8 needs a replacement for Kolbe who can hit the ground running. Needed is someone with the smarts, experience, skills and deep understanding to give southern Arizona strong representation. The Tucson Citizen endorses Gabrielle Giffords in the Democratic primary for Congressional District 8.”
