Giffords Has Been a Tireless Advocate for Arizona’s Women

Candidate Will Continue Positive and Effective Work in Washington

TUCSON - During her legislative and business career, Gabrielle Giffords, candidate for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, has championed the causes that matter to Arizona’s women. She has fought for emergency contraception for rape victims, cracked down on domestic abusers, promoted health care coverage for women with breast and cervical cancer, and defended a woman’s right to choose. Gabrielle Giffords has always stood up for the women of Arizona, and will continue this fight as a Member of Congress.

Some of Giffords’ accomplishments include:

  • Giffords sponsored legislation to require health care professionals to offer emergency contraception to women who are victims of rape (HB 2374, 2003).
  • Giffords sponsored legislation to establish a task force to study cervical cancer in women and options for increasing screening accuracy (HB 2615, 2005, and HCM 2001, 2005).
  • Giffords supported legislation to require repeat domestic abusers to serve prison time. This legislation provided an enhanced penalty if a defendant committed a domestic violence felony against a pregnant victim and knows the victim is pregnant. (HB 2268, 2001).
  • Giffords sponsored legislation to appropriate $500,000 for emergency residential, transitional and legal programs for domestic violence victims and their children. (HB 2439, 2001)
  • Giffords supported a constitutional amendment to make persons accused of a domestic violence offense ineligible for bail under certain circumstances. (HCR 2014, 2001)
  • Giffords supports a woman’s right to choose, including in cases of rape and incest.
  • Giffords was named Woman of the Year by Tucson Business Edge in 2005.
  • Giffords was named YWCA Woman on the Move in 2005.
  • Giffords serves on the board of the Breast Cancer Boot Camp, a fitness-based support program created to help survivors stay active during cancer treatment and beyond, providing them the tools to take charge of their health.

“I am proud of my record of standing up for the women of Arizona,” said Giffords. “I plan to continue this important work in Washington.”
