Giffords Wins Commanding Victory in Southern Arizona’s Eighth Congressional District
TUCSON - Third-generation Southern Arizonan Gabrielle Giffords won a commanding victory today in the race to replace moderate Republican Jim Kolbe in Congress. Amassing a 12 percent lead by winning majorities in Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties, Giffords demonstrated widespread, bipartisan appeal in the Republican-leaning district.
“About 10 years ago, I packed up my truck, put on my boots and came home to Tucson, to help change tires and change our family business,” said Giffords in her victory speech. “About 10 months ago, we, all of us together, launched a campaign to change the direction of our country.
“And as we can all see here tonight, that change starts right here, right now.”
Kolbe attended Giffords’ victory party at Tucson’s Doubletree Hotel, along with former Congressman Jim McNulty, who preceeded Kolbe in Congress. McNulty was a close ally of legendary Arizona leader Mo Udall. Kolbe ascended the stage and embraced his successor.
“As you may have seen, there are some lines I just won’t cross,” said Giffords during her victory speech.
“But there is one line I will never be afraid to cross. I will extend my hand across the aisle anytime I believe that we have an opportunity to get something meaningful done for the people.”
