GIFFORDS APPOINTED TO HOUSE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE

Tucson, AZ €“ Congresswoman-elect Gabrielle Giffords has been selected to serve on the House Armed Services Committee during the 110 th Congress, which convenes on January 4th, 2007.

“Serving on this committee allows me to implement the commitments that I made to the people of Southern Arizona: to provide Congressional oversight to the Pentagon and the Administration’s military policies, to rebuild American military readiness; to refocus our attention to the war in Afghanistan; and to concentrate on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.”

“I am greatly honored to have the opportunity to serve Arizona’s 8th Congressional
District on the House Armed Services Committee.” Giffords said. “From this position I will be able to provide the men and women in the Armed Services of Southern Arizona from Fort Huachuca to Davis Monthan with the resources they and their families need. Southern Arizona is home to one of the highest concentrations of veterans and I look forward to being their advocate in Congress.”

Giffords has a long track record of supporting our military community. She serves on the 162nd Air National Guard Fighter Wing Civilian Support Group, providing assistance to the men and women serving in the National Guard. She also works with the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve, an organization that works to ensure that returning members of the Guard and Reserve have their jobs when they return from active duty.

Giffords looks forward to working with her colleagues on both sides of the aisle as they move toward a new direction both in Iraq and here at home. “While the courage of our troops embodies the best of America, the poor management of the war in Iraq needs to change,” she said.

Congresswoman-elect Giffords is currently traveling throughout the district on a listening tour and will be in Willcox, SierraVista, Douglas, Bisbee, Green Valley and Oro Valley in the coming week. For information on her schedule, please call the Congressional Transition office at 520-512-0012.
