U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been appointed vice chair of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment.
The 18-member Subcommittee on Energy and Environment is one of five subcommittees of the Science and Technology Committee, a committee on which Giffords sits.
The subcommittee oversees civilian research and development programs with the Department of Energy, including renewable energy and conservation. It also has responsibilities overseeing programs at the National Weather Service, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Giffords, who was elected in November to represent Southeastern Arizona, also serves on the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees.
