The Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department dedication of the Arizona Trail took place May 12 at Colossal Cave Mountain Park.
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., hosted the dedication.
The Arizona Trail is Arizona’s pre-eminent trail and stretches a total of 800 miles from the Arizona-Utah border to the Arizona-Mexico border. The trail passes through some of Arizona’s most stunning scenery, including the Grand Canyon and the Sonoran Desert.
The trail is now more than 92 percent complete; less than 57 miles of trail remain to be sited and built.
Giffords recognized about 50 volunteers who donated their time and labor to make this popular section of trail a reality.
Among the honored volunteers was Wendy Erica Werden, a member of the Arizona Trail Association Board who also belongs to the Tucson Saddle Club and the Saguaro Horsemen’s Association.
