Giffords helps would-be scientists

Helping 20 aspiring science students from Empire High School, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Tucson, held a video conference that included two National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronauts. Giffords, who represents Congressional District 8, is a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, hosted the meeting in Tucson to promote the importance of math and science education and to give students the opportunity to learn more about space exploration and careers with NASA.

Along with the students, Empire science teachers Michael Frank and Mika Jensen participated in the 90-minute conference.

Astronauts answering students’ questions about careers in math and science were Julie Payette, an astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency and Mark Kelly, a NASA astronaut who will command a space shuttle flight in April 2008. Kelly is also Giffords’ fianc/e.

Calvin Baker, superintendent of the Vail School District, said it is important to take advantage of these kinds of opportunities.

“It is important for the students to be encouraged and challenged by people outside of their day-to-day contacts,” he said. “It sends a critical message that parents and teachers are not the only ones interested in them and their achievement.”

“People like astronauts and legislators also serve to provide students with unique perspectives. Those of us who regularly work with students greatly appreciate the help,” he added.
