Peggy Lockard
Peggy Lockard is Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ May Supporter of the Month.
Peggy is a 50-year resident of Tucson. She’s seen a lot of changes since she moved to Tucson, when Wilmot Road was still a dirt road and all the shopping was downtown — there were no malls.
Her first introduction to politics was as the first woman chair for the Arizona Young Republicans. Peggy was a Goldwater Girl and found working for him “to be a great time to be a member of the party.” When the Pima County Republicans failed to discuss a motion made about the Equal Rights Amendment, Peggy registered as a Democrat and never looked back.
Peggy supported Gabrielle in 2006 and began volunteering in January after a friend suggested she get involved. “I admire Gabrielle and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get her re-elected,” she says, which includes working two days a week at the front desk, answering the phone, doing mailings and data processing. The most pressing issues for Peggy are the Iraq War and health care. “What I love about Gabrielle is her interest in what you have to say, even though she may not agree with you. She’s such a wonderful listener,” says Peggy.
When not at the campaign office, Peggy loves playing bridge, painting landscapes and flowers, and working out twice a week. She had been a legal secretary, a model, a real estate broker, and a publisher. She has five children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
