Ben McNitt
Ben McNitt is Gabrielle Giffords’ June Supporter of the Month. Ben got involved with Congresswoman Giffords campaign as a neighborhood canvasser because “This is a crucial election and the seat must remain in the Democrat column.” Ben believes that “One of the most useful things to do is talk to people, face-to-face, and let them know how much Gabrielle is doing for our district.”
Ben McNitt began his career at the Arizona Daily Star as a political reporter in the 1970’s. He later moved to the Tucson Citizen to cover environmental issues and became Arizona’s first environmental reporter.
Looking for a change of scenery, Ben bought a one-way ticket to Cairo and landed a job as a free-lancer at CBS News. Soon, CNN chose him as their Cairo Bureau Chief and Mid-East correspondent.
After six years in Egypt Ben went to Washington, DC and worked for the
National Wildlife Federation. Eighteen years later he retired as its Senior Communications Director.
Ben now designs custom furniture at his personal business, McNitt Bros. Wood Works here in Tucson.
Luckily for Tucson, Ben considers this town a place “where he feels the most attachment.” He began volunteering for Gabrielle because she is “an outstanding representative. She is young, bright, on top of the issues and constructively engaged.” His top concern for this upcoming election is climate change, which “Gabrielle has an outstanding record on.”
When not walking door-to-door for Gabrielle and designing custom furniture, Ben loves to cook, read, landscape and bird watch.
