Democratic and Republican lawmakers from border states are asking President Barack Obama to send National Guard troops to the southern border—and to allow them to shoot back.

“We urge you to deploy the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border, as has been requested by a number of border state governors,” the group of lawmakers wrote to Obama Wednesday. “Any National Guard troops that are deployed…should be armed and allowed to defend themselves if fired upon or attacked.”

David Ladner finally came to the realization at a Saturday morning job fair that, at 59, he will likely end up a student again.

After 35 years in construction, he’s been out of work since November, with few prospects. After talking to a representative of ITT Technical Institute at the fair, he set up an appointment for Monday to talk about getting started on a new career.

“It stresses me out to have to go back to school and do a whole career change at this stage in my life, but you do what you have to do.”

More than 300 job seekers attended a three-hour expo at the downtown YWCA, hosted by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and geared toward helping the unemployed get information on retraining opportunities and connect with more than 40 employers actively seeking new workers.

U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords started rolling out her endorsements Tuesday, highlighting a first round of support from Republicans and independents.

Among the supporters: Arizona Corporation Commissioner Kris Mayes, Sahuarita Mayor Lynne Skelton, former Arizona Board of Regents president Judy Gignac and longtime auto dealer Don Mackey. David Rataczak, adjutant general of the Arizona Army and Air National Guard from 1999 through 2008, lauded Giffords’ support for the military, while Paul Bonavia, the CEO of UniSource Energy, complimented her work on solar projects.

The release did not specify the party registration of each individual.

“Party affiliation doesn’t matter to these men and women,” said campaign Chairman Michael McNulty, in a statement. “They want a representative who rolls up her sleeves and reaches across the aisle to get the job done.”

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will vote for the health-care reform bill.

Ending weeks of speculation about whether she will vote for the measure, Giffords said in a prepared statement Saturday that a vote in support “fundamentally is the right thing to do.”

Among the benefits of the legislation, she noted, children with pre-existing conditions will no longer be denied coverage, children can stay on their parents’ insurance plan until they turn 26 and small businesses will receive tax credits to purchase health insurance for employees.

“As a member of the fiscally responsible Blue Dog coalition, I am very pleased that this legislation is fully paid for and will reduce our budget deficit by $138 billion over the next decade.”

Pueblo Politics: Giffords invites First Lady to visit in August

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Arizona Daily Star, March 16, 2010

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Monday penned a letter to First Lady Michelle Obama asking her to attend Women’s Equality Day at Fort Huachuca on Aug. 24.

That date, coincidentally, is the same day as Arizona’s primary election, when it will become clear which candidate Giffords will face in November.

Giffords request is a follow-up from a February invitation from Major Gen. John Custer, who asked Mrs. Obama to be the keynote speaker at the event, to honor the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote in August 1920.

Noting women make up 20 percent of the modern military, Giffords wrote, “The opportunity to hear you share your experiences as a wife, mother, lawyer, public servant and First Lady would mean a great deal to the soldiers, families and civilians who live and work at the Fort.”

Republican challenger Brian Miller, one of four running in the GOP primary, pondered whether presidential visits are being dangled to wavering representatives to get them to commit to the health care bill. “Will this trip include some campaign stumping for our current Congresswoman?” he speculated.

Entry in Congressional Record honors second annual festival to be held this weekend

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has honored the 2010 Tucson Festival of Books with a commendation entered in the Congressional Record.

“The Tucson Festival of Books is a celebration of literacy and an opportunity for those of us who cherish books to meet the men and women who write them,” Giffords said in her statement. “It is, ultimately, a community’s recognition of the great value we place on the written word.”

The 2010 Tucson Festival of Books will be held Saturday and Sunday at the University of Arizona. The event is sponsored by the University of Arizona, the Arizona Daily Star and The Diamond Children’s Medical Center.

Giffords also praised the numerous volunteers who have worked to organize and run the festival. “On behalf of a grateful community, I thank and commend them for bringing us this incredible gift,” Giffords said in her statement..

With Giffords’ Congressional Record commendation, the significance of the Tucson Festival of Books will become a part of the permanent history of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Bill Takes Aim at Flaws in E-Verify System

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Latin American Herald Tribune, March 9, 2010
TUCSON, Arizona – The E-Verify program to verify the immigration status of employees has made a number of mistakes, according to its critics, and so lawmakers are pushing for approval of a bill to apply the law without hurting workers.

The bill, sponsored by a bipartisan group headed by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) seeks to verify not only the eligibility to work of potential employees but also their identities.

“I’m very concerned about the cases we’ve had of citizens who have been disqualified and those of undocumented people with fake documents who have been certified to work with E-Verify,” Giffords told Efe.

The New Employee Verification Act was presented by Giffords with the support of Texas Republican Sam Johnson for the first time two years ago, but it has been generating interest again after a report that emerged last month revealing serious failures of E-Verify in cases of identity theft.

“Arizona was the first state in the country to require all employers to use the E-Verify program to verify the immigration status of their workers,” said Giffords, who added that she constantly receives complaints from employers who say that the current system has many problems.

“Some people hear that E-Verify only has a (small) error percentage, but if we’re talking of implementing it in an obligatory manner on the national level, we would be talking about millions of workers who could be negatively impacted,” she said.

NEVA is seeking to do away with one of the weak points of E-Verify, which is the identity theft committed by certain undocumented immigrants who use the name and Social Security number of another person to be able to deceive the system.

The bill proposes having employers use databases of federal agencies in addition to those at Social Security and Department of Homeland Security, like the national directory of new hirings, which originated as part of an effort to ensure payment of child support.

It also proposes the voluntary use of experts from the private sector certified by the federal government who would validate the identity of the workers.

In addition, NEVA would permit people to block the verification of their Social Security number in the case where they are not seeking work themselves.

The businesses that implement all these changes will have immunity from legal action against them if undocumented workers are discovered on their payrolls.

The measure currently has the support of 10 legislators, three Democrats and seven Republicans, as well as the support of a number of organizations and chambers of commerce.

Giffords said that she is not against E-Verify and that on the contrary she supports the idea of implementing it on the national level, though with its faults corrected.

The Democratic congresswoman acknowledged that the problem of illegal immigration cannot be solved just by implementing an employment verification program and she said that she supports immigration reform.

“We would like to see an immigration reform proposal this year in Congress and we’d like our employment verification program plan to be included in it,” she emphasized.

Currently, 11 states demand that businesses use the E-Verify program. EFE
