AZ-08: U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Re-Elected to Represent Arizona’s 8th District

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords issued the following statement regarding her re-election to represent Arizona’s 8th District in Congress:

“I am deeply honored that the people of Southern Arizona made their choice to return me to Congress to fight for their interests.

“Our victory was not an accident. We won because Democrats, Republicans and Independents pulled together in our campaign to focus on the real solutions to the obstacles that we face.

“The challenges before us are great. Families are struggling in this tough economy, our border is not yet secure and our seniors worry about even the most basic necessities.  We need to confront these challenges of a changing world head-on.

“We must work together to bring the next generation of jobs to Arizona, jobs based on engineering and science, and in solar energy, where Arizona can be a world leader.

“I would like to acknowledge my opponent’s hard-fought campaign. To Mr. Kelly’s supporters, I respect your opinions, admire your passion and share your love of our great state and country.

“Our country must be strong enough to solve problems and that means we must learn how to work together again. Our children are counting on us.”

AZ-08 NEW AD: Backing Up Our Veterans

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – Today, Giffords for Congress is releasing a new TV ad, “Backing Up Our Veterans.” The ad features U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Brian Kolfage discussing how Gabrielle helped him find the medical care he needed after he was severely wounded in Iraq.

“Congresswoman Giffords truly cares about veterans, and she backs it up,” Kolfage says in the ad.

The ad begins airing tomorrow in the Tucson media market.

As the only person in Congress married to someone on active duty in the military and the first person from Southern Arizona to serve on the House Armed Services Committee, Gabrielle understands the pressures facing military families.

Since taking office, Gabrielle has helped thousands of Southern Arizona veterans like Kolfage obtain the care they earned. She has recovered over $1 million dollars in VA and other benefits owed to these brave Arizona heroes.

Gabrielle is a strong voice fighting for the health care and education that our Southern Arizona veterans need. She voted for the largest VA funding increase in history and for resources for the VA to provide specialized care for 21st Century war injuries, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Gabrielle helped push through the Post-9/11 GI Bill of Rights so our servicemen and women – or their spouses and children – can afford four years of college when they return home.

At a press conference held yesterday in Tucson, Gabrielle announced her endorsement by the Veterans of Foreign Wars PAC. The VFW is the largest veterans organization in the nation with more than 2.1 million members.

Giffords was also endorsed by brave Southern Arizona heroes, including General John Wickham (Ret.), who served as U.S. Army Chief of Staff under President Ronald Reagan, and USMC General John Cronin (Ret.), former Commanding General of the 4th Wing and former Commanding General of Marine Corps Base Quantico. Gabrielle Giffords is a third generation Southern Arizonan and the only person in Congress with an active duty military spouse. Gabrielle is not like other politicians. She takes an independent view on the issues and was rated Arizona’s most moderate member of Congress by the National Journal in 2009. She’s voted against a Congressional pay raise every time one has come up, and she doesn’t make earmark requests for campaign contributors. Most importantly, Gabrielle stands up for Southern Arizona by working across the aisle to secure the border, protect our military and veterans and create jobs by investing in solar energy.

AZ-08: Leading Southern Arizona Veterans, VFW PAC Say Gabrielle Giffords The Right Choice

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – Respected Southern Arizona veterans formally endorsed Gabrielle Giffords at a press conference earlier today in Tucson.

Giffords has also been endorsed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee. In his endorsement letter, VFW-PAC Director Salvatore J. Capirchio recognized Gabrielle’s “strong support for veterans, national security and defense and military personnel issues.”

Among the Arizona heroes who endorsed Gabrielle today was U.S. Marine Corps General John Cronin (Ret.), former Commanding General of the 4th Wing and former Commanding General of Marine Corps Base Quantico. Cronin recognized Giffords’ support of the military’s strategic initiative to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. He also praised Giffords for “walking the walk” when it comes to supporting the troops.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Brian Kolfage, a UofA architecture student who was among the most seriously injured Iraq war veterans, spoke about Congresswoman Giffords’ work helping him get the care he needed and transition back home.

Retired General John Wickham, U.S. Army Chief of Staff under President Ronald Reagan, praised Giffords’ record in Congress, where she serves on the House Armed Services Committee. “Having worked with Congresswoman Giffords, I know first hand that she represents Arizona’s interests one hundred percent,” the general said. “She not only understands defense and veterans issues, but she provides rock solid support for them. I strongly endorse her re-election.”

Longtime Tucson businessman and U.S. Air Force and Arizona Air National Guard Captain Stan Abrams (Ret.) served as an active duty U.S. Air Force officer and later as an Arizona Air National Guardsman during the height of the Cold War. He offered a forceful endorsement of Giffords. “I have known and admired Gabrielle since she ran her family’s tire company here in Tucson. She had a strong understanding of the needs of our business community even then. She did an outstanding job during her time in the Arizona legislature and has lived up to that standard since being elected to Congress. Gabrielle’s work for the veteran community and her strong support of Davis-Monthan and the Air National Guard are especially impressive and will produce long term benefits for Arizona’s economy. I cannot think of any better champion for Southern Arizona than
Gabrielle.”

U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Bob Berry (Ret.) served in both World War II and the Korean War. Berry praised Giffords’ hard work for Arizona veterans. “Gabrielle is the most sincere, loyal person to veterans issues I’ve ever known. She works tirelessly to make a better life for veterans. She is the best friend veterans have ever had in Arizona.”

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert Gent (Ret.) expressed support of Giffords’ work for Arizona’s 8th District. Gent said of Giffords, “Gabrielle is everywhere representing our district on the key issues. She cares about veterans and defends our rights. She understands the complexity of border security and takes action to protect us. She enthusiastically promotes solar energy for Arizona. This is something we should all be doing. It’s time to stop importing foreign oil. I am amazed that she is able to do so much for our district, and we endorse her re-election wholeheartedly.”

“In the military, we evaluated leaders by their performance in a crisis,” said U.S. Navy Captain Chris McNamara (Ret.). “The good ones were calm and well-prepared; they unceasingly pressed towards a solution, engaging any and all who might contribute to that solution. They did not panic, they were not shrill, and they did not pontificate. Gabrielle Giffords is a very good leader. We can ill-afford to lose her as our representative just when her leadership traits are needed most.”

Sr. Master Sargant John Soltero, Sr. (Ret.), USAF, and his son, Chief Warrant Officer John Soltero, Jr. (Ret.), U.S. Army, also endorsed Giffords at today’s press conference.

Also endorsing Giffords today is U.S. Army Iraq war veteran Mat Randle. “As a veteran, knowing I have the benefits that I have earned and things that I need to be successful, like the GI Bill and VA healthcare, means a lot. American soldiers gladly go where this country asks them to go. It’s important that when we come home that’s not forgotten. It’s very clear to me that Gabrielle does not forget what we have done and what we continue to do. Gabrielle has held her end of the bargain. She has kept us at the front of what she does.”

Giffords was previously endorsed by former Arizona Army and Air National Guard Adjutant Gen. David Rataczak (Ret.); Sierra Vista Mayor Robert Strain, a thirty-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force; and U.S. Air Force Maj. General Bill Van Dyke (Ret.), the former Arizona Adjutant General.

In his endorsement, General Rataczak described Giffords as a “tireless fighter for the 162nd Fighter Wing, working to ensure the future of its missions at Tucson International Airport as well as the millions of dollars it pumps into Southern Arizona’s economy every year.”

General Van Dyke, the former Adjutant General of Arizona and a life-long conservative said, “I have known Congresswoman Giffords for a number of years and my respect for her integrity and moderate approach to issues continues to grow. Her concern for our men and women in the service of our country is especially noteworthy. Frankly, even though I have been a life-long conservative, I find that Congresswoman Giffords brings a sense of thoughtfulness and moderation to any issue, and I like that… [S]he is not an emotional, ‘shoot from the hip’ politician. When Gabby shoots, it’s on target.”

Giffords is the only member of Congress with a spouse serving on active duty in the military. Her husband Mark Kelly is a U.S. Navy Captain and NASA space shuttle commander.

AZ-08: Arizona Daily Star Says Giffords a Fierce Advocate for Southern Arizona

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – Independence. Courage. Accessibility. Tenacity. Integrity.

Those are just some of the words used today by the Arizona Daily Star in its endorsement of Gabrielle Giffords.

Gabrielle’s hometown newspaper urged Southeastern Arizona voters to send her back to Washington so she can continue to work for the kind of “common sense” solutions that distinguish her from her opponent, Jesse Kelly.

Southern Arizona’s paper of record also praised Giffords for her “moderate voting record,” “eagerness to engage with people who don’t agree with her” and record as a “fiscal conservative.”

Elections are about choices. Today’s Arizona Daily Star’s editorial shows that the choice facing Southern Arizona voters is clear.

Giffords a fierce advocate for Southern Arizona
Our view: She’s demonstrated courage, independence in two terms in Congress

Arizona Daily Star
Friday, October 22, 2010

Gabrielle Giffords is a fierce advocate for Southern Arizona, holds substantive, common-sense views and has demonstrated courage and independence during her two terms in Congress.

Giffords is running against newcomer Jesse Kelly, a Republican, who has never held public office and is too reliant on fiery soundbites and practiced comebacks instead of workable, specific policy ideas.

We have watched Giffords expand her knowledge and use her influence in Washington to help shape issues vital to Southern Arizona, like border security.

We continue to be impressed with her affinity for the details. She doesn’t say “I support the health-care reform legislation” and leave it there. She explains why it’s necessary and why it is good for the people she represents.

Additionally, Giffords doesn’t talk about the need for energy independence, she sponsors legislation that will help expand the solar industry in Southern Arizona. She knows that while it might be popular in some corners to rail against “the government,” the fact is that in her district, many jobs are government jobs or are dependent on government contracts.

Giffords’ record on immigration is strong. She has been a strong proponent of overhauling the system and can explain, in detail, why and how it should be fixed. Her support for the National Guard along the border, and for an increase in Border Patrol agents and practical technology so those agents can better stop drugs and people smugglers demonstrates that she is focused on tangible solutions.

She spoke out against the boycott of Arizona, and she also opposes SB 1070, because she saw that hurting Arizona’s working people would not fix immigration and would cause only more problems. When problems with an entrance to Fort Huachuca near Sierra Vista cropped up, or flood-plain issues arose in the district, Giffords was there with solutions and she got it done.

We appreciate her accessibility and her eagerness to engage with people who don’t agree with her. She doesn’t back down and is frequently the most informed person in the room.

She has a moderate voting record in Congress and seeks out practical solutions instead of ideological rigidity. One way she demonstrates that is by holding regular public meetings in her district and by speaking individually with the people she represents.

Giffords has met critics head-on and explained her support of, for example, the health-care-reform legislation and Social Security. She has withstood attacks from outside political operatives who seek to tarnish her record with lies and misrepresentations about her positions.

Giffords said during a recent debate that she would never vote to privatize Social Security. We believe those in District 8 should take note that she is not against innovation in the system but puts an appropriate priority on keeping a safety net in place for Americans.

She does not advocate for big government and is a fiscal conservative. We agree with her philosophy on both points.

She recognizes that the federal government does have an important role in keeping drinking water and air quality safe, in safeguarding consumers, in helping needy students go to college, in protecting our security and in investing in local communities.

We respect Giffords’ tenacity, intelligence and integrity. We again endorse her to represent Congressional District 8 in the U.S. House of Representatives.

AZ-08: Kelly calls to eliminate FDA, because when it comes to food safety “its our job to protect ourselves”

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – We already know that Jesse Kelly wants to “eliminate” FDR’s legacy – Social Security – on which millions of American seniors rely to avoid poverty. But this week we learned that Kelly also wants to eliminate Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy – the Food and Drug Administration.

At two recent events, Kelly asserted that the government should play no role in American food safety. In Kelly’s words, the FDA should be reduced “as much as humanly possible.”

At a barbeque at Continental Ranch on Saturday, Kelly was asked what the government could do protect consumers from incidents like the recent recall of half a million salmonella-tainted eggs that made more than 1,000 Americans dangerously sick. Kelly’s response was simple: “it’s our job to protect ourselves.”

When pushed by the questioner about the absurdity of this response, Kelly likened the recent salmonella outbreak to the BP oil spill, saying it was excessive government involvement that caused the crisis.

“Nobody is going to look out for your best interests but you,” he told the questioner.

This exchange echoes the promise that Kelly made to the Rotary Club of Tucson on Oct. 6: “I want to reduce the FDA, in fact, reduce them as much as humanly possible,” he said.

The Food and Drug Administration is tasked with approving prescription drugs and vaccines for market, as well as enforcing food safety laws. Its roots are in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act, signed into law the same year by Republican President Theodore Roosevelt to protect Americans from being injured or killed by defective medicines or hazardous foods.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, about 76 million Americans are sickened and 5,000 die every year from food-borne diseases, such as E. coli and salmonella, which was the very disease Kelly was asked about at Continental Ranch.

“When Jesse Kelly was asked by an Arizona woman what he would do to protect her family from salmonella if he got to Congress, he told her the truth,’ said Rodd McLeod, campaign manager for Giffords for Congress. “He told her he wouldn’t lift a finger for her — or her family. He said she was on her own, because Mr. Kelly is too scared to break the rules that the big corporations have assigned to him.”

The video of the Continental Ranch event can be viewed here http://bit.ly/94wrUb and the Rotary Club talk can be viewed here http://bit.ly/bbmGBc.

But even a quick look at what Kelly is calling for – life before Theodore Roosevelt’s landmark food safety bill – is enough to make every voter sick: http://bit.ly/c79I8l.

The transcript of the Continental Ranch exchange:

Questioner: “Given the salmonella outbreaks we have every three weeks, with the chicken industry, with the pesticides and whatnot they put on spinach, we have rules and regulations, but however there is no rule mandating they must be enforced. Is there some way that when you are in Congress you can have a bill passed that will say that instead of having these companies voluntarily change, mandate that they must change or give them the ability to shut them down? And that goes for mining companies and everybody else who has hundreds of violations against them?”

Jesse Kelly: “That’s the first time I’ve ever had that question. Congratulations on being unique. First shot out of the box, I do not believe we’re lacking in new federal regulation or mandates on business. We have over 300,000 federal regulations that come with a criminal penalty right now. You could literally spit on the grass and be arrested by the federal government, if they so chose. And the three industries in this county that failed, the auto, energy and the housing sectors are the three most regulated parts of our government, our society or economy. More regulations, more control, giving Nancy Pelosi more power over the country is not the solution right now.”

Questioner: “Who’s protecting us?”

Jesse Kelly: “That’s the thing, ma’am, it’s our job to protect ourselves because no one else is going to look out for your best interests like you. No one else is going to protect your money like you. If you go to government right now, they look out for their own best interests.

Questioner: “Am I supposed to go to a chicken farmer and say, ‘I’d like you to close down because all of your birds are half dead?’”

Jesse Kelly: “Well, I don’t know anything about the chicken farmers or the salmonella outbreaks right now, ma’am. I’ve actually not heard about that recently. Obviously there’s a new thing that comes along every day. But I know this – any portion of any economy, whether it’s our own or another, that’s heavily regulated by the government doesn’t have fewer disasters, they have more. That oil spill in the gulf that came about because we forced the oil company into five thousand feet of ocean water to drill for oil because they were not allowed to drill offshore. That was not caused by the evil greedy corporations. Government did that.”

AZ-08: Giffords’ Statement on Today’s Jobs Report

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – Below is a statement from Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in response to today’s Department of Commerce report that Arizona’s unemployment remained at 9.7 percent for September:

“As a former small business owner, I know that the best economic stimulus is a job and the best long-term economic investment is education. That’s why I opposed the boycott against Arizona and voted for tax cuts for small businesses and the middle class, as well as incentives to create thousands of good jobs in our solar industry.

“Jesse Kelly’s plan to cut $1 billion more from Arizona schools, eliminate all income taxes for companies that ship jobs overseas and establish a 23 percent national sales tax that would raise taxes on 80 percent of Arizona families would send us in exactly the wrong direction. Kelly even opposes unemployment insurance for Arizonans who have been laid off. In this economy we need to do more for people struggling to get by – not less.

“For nearly a decade, Washington tried the failed policies that Jesse Kelly is trying to sell us. They didn’t work then and they won’t work now.”

AZ-08: Giffords Wins Second Debate with Strong Vision for Fort Huachuca, Border Security and Economic Growth

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – Gabrielle Giffords won last night’s AZ-08 debate in Sierra Vista by laying out a vision for strengthening Southern Arizona’s economy, securing the border and protecting Fort Huachuca.

Giffords presented a three-part economic plan that includes extending tax cuts for the middle class and small businesses; developing the solar energy industry, which has the potential to create tens of thousands of high-paying jobs in Southern Arizona; and investing in Arizona’s schools.

As in Monday’s debate, Jesse Kelly nervously dodged questions about his support for a 23 percent national sales tax on food, gas and other essentials.  Despite having said that he supports the 23 percent consumption tax in the past–including in a video his campaign posted on their Kelly4Congress youtube channel–Mr. Kelly refused to answer the question when he was directly asked during last night’s debate.

Also similar to Monday’s debate, Kelly unabashedly stood by his call to eliminate the Department of Education, cutting a $1 billion from our schools.

On questions about Fort Huachuca, the economic heart of Cochise County, Giffords discussed the need to be vigilant protecting the San Pedro River, without which theFort could be forced to close. Giffords also committed to continue fighting for resources for the Fort, such as those she secured for a new fire station on the base and the joint Fort Huachuca – U of A battle lab that will use computer simulations to help predict and prevent insurgent attacks.

Kelly knew next to nothing about the Fort. Despite having been running for Congress for roughly 18 months, Mr. Kelly has not bothered to learn about the treasures of the 8th district, such as Ft. Huachuca.  Incredibly, Kelly said he would refuse to request  federal earmakrs for the Fort. He also appeared unaware of the steps needed to protect the San Pedro River and, by extension, the Fort itself.

On border security, Giffords made a powerful case.  Having recently pushed through $600 million in border funding, Giffords highlighted the need for additional boots and 21st Century security technology on the ground, the importance of the I-19 checkpoint and a nationwide employee verification program.

Per usual, Kelly repeated his hollow call for a double-layer fence, unaware that tunnels, ladders and ultralight aircraft are used by smuggling cartels to bypass the fence.  While Kelly touts the double-layer fence as a cure-all, Giffords is working across the aisle to achieve the comprehensive solutions to stop the sophisticated cartels that threaten Southern Arizona.

“It’s no wonder that Kelly is afraid to tell voters about his plan to supersize the sales tax and crush the middle clash,” said Rodd McLeod, campaign manager for Giffords for Congress. “But his unwillingness to answer the question over and over has to make you wonder: who does Kelly think he’s fooling?”

Gabrielle Giffords is a third generation Southern Arizonan and the only person in Congress with an active duty military spouse. Gabrielle is not like other politicians. AZ-08 NEW AD: “A Terrible Gamble”

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Kelly’s plan to privatize Social Security would gamble seniors’ retirement security in the market.

Tucson, Ariz. – Giffords for Congress today released a new television ad, “A Terrible Gamble.” The ad features Betty Evans, a retired nurse from Tucson, discussing the dangers of Jesse Kelly’s plans to privatize Social Security.

The ad begins running on Tucson television stations tonight.

“I think putting your Social Security money in the stock market would be a terrible gamble,” says Evans in the ad. “I would be very frightened. Jesse Kelly and all the people trying to get rid of Social Security and Medicare need to walk in somebody else’s shoes for a while. We certainly don’t need someone who is more interested in greed and not interested in the rest of the population. Social Security should be a guarantee.”

At Monday night’s AZ-08 debate, Kelly reiterated his commitment to privatizing Social Security. He has repeatedly called to “eliminate” and “phase out” Social Security. At the debate, Kelly again failed to explain how current retirees’ benefits would be met if younger workers stop fully paying into the system.

For 75 years, Social Security has been a bedrock promise between generations. Nine out of 10 Americans over the age of 65 receive Social Security benefits. Without Social Security, half of America’s seniors would live in poverty.

Gabrielle is committed to protecting Social Security, including opposing leaders in her own party who want to raise the retirement age. Gabrielle will never vote to privatize the program.

Gabrielle has been endorsed by the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, an organization dedicated to fighting for working families and seniors. In their letter, they praised her understanding of and support for “the critical roles that Social Security and Medicare play in the retirement and health security of our nation’s older citizens and their families.”

Gabrielle Giffords is a third generation Southern Arizonan and the only person in Congress with an active duty military spouse. Gabrielle is not like other politicians. AZ-08 NEW AD: “Her Heart is with Small Business”

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Tucson, Ariz. – Today, Giffords for Congress is releasing a new TV ad, “Her Heart is with Small Business.” The ad features Southern Arizona small business owner Dot Kret discussing Gabrielle’s strong support for small business.

“She could relate to what I was going through as a small business owner,” Kret says. “Because Congresswoman Giffords did run a business, her heart is with small business.”

The ad begins airing tonight in the Tucson media market.

A former small business owner herself, Gabrielle knows the challenges facing Southern Arizonans firsthand. She has a strong record of supporting small businesses and is working hard to put Southern Arizona’s economy back on track:

  • She voted for tax cuts to small business owners to help them afford the cost of operating their business.
  • She helped pushed through the HIRE Act to cut taxes for businesses that hire unemployed workers, creating new jobs and helping small businesses expand.
  • She authored the Solar Manufacturing Advancement Act, which provides a 30 percent tax credit for investments in plants or machinery to manufacture renewable energy technologies.
  • She sponsored the Solar Technology Roadmap Act that that serves as a guide for solar research and authorizes $2.5 billion for the Department of Energy Solar Energy Technology program.
